Shalom Aleichem Chevra, welcome to a brand new week in Parashat Noach! What was the world like before the flood, and why does the Torah start the story of Noach by praising him before it even names his children? We open Genesis 6 and look at how far humanity had fallen, with powerful rulers (or possibly angelic beings, as Rashi raises) taking whatever they wanted, even married women. We talk about the law of diminishing returns, using a candy bar example, to understand why people kept needing something wilder. We look at the verse about the heart being evil all day, and how the mind and heart are meant to work together, with passion following the mind. We see why Hashem's reconsidering means a shift in perspective, and connect it to the mitzvah of comforting mourners. Then we ask why the Torah praises Noach right after saying these are his offspring, and Rashi's two answers: mentioning a tzaddik brings blessing, and your good deeds are your real children.
