Shalom Aleichem Chevra, welcome back! Who exactly is a righteous Gentile — and what does it take to actually become one? We kick things off diving into Sefer Devarim, the fifth book of the Torah, sometimes called Mishneh Torah or Toras Moshe. Moshe Rabbeinu is beginning his final farewell address to the Jewish people, and Rashi shows us how he hints at the sins of the midbar — the complaints, the Golden Calf, the episode of Baal Peor — not to shame the nation but to bring them to teshuva. We also talk about the significance of the 11th month, the 1st of Shvat, and how Moshe has exactly five weeks to transmit the entire book of Devarim before his passing on the 7th of Adar. We even touch on the beautiful idea that Moshe translated the Torah into 70 languages, because the Torah is ultimately for all of humanity. From there we go deep into a Gemara in Sanhedrin that completely flips the script on who we think righteous Gentiles are. We look at figures like Naaman, the general of the king of Aram who became a Ger Toshav, and Nevuzaradan, the Roman general who witnessed the blood of Zechariah the prophet still bubbling centuries later — and that sight cracked him open. He did teshuva and converted. We also cover Sisera's descendants who became Torah scholars, the children of Sancheirev who left behind their destructive legacy, and even descendants of Haman who came to Bnei Brak and learned Torah. We break down the difference between a Ger Toshav — someone who rejects idol worship and accepts the basic seven Noahide laws — and a full Ger Tzedek who takes on all 613 mitzvos. The big takeaway the Chevra? Teshuva is real. No background, no history, no lineage disqualifies a person from turning toward God. The Gemara is telling us that even the worst enemies of the Jewish people produced descendants who became righteous. That is a message about the power of free will and the accessibility of closeness to Hashem for every human being.
