Shalom Aleichem Chevra, what is going on?! If Hashem sent an angel of compassion to stop one of the most evil sorcerers in history — what does that tell us about how far He'll go to help you and me? In this shiur we dive deep into Parshat Balak, following Bilaam as he saddles his own donkey and rides out to curse the Jewish people. Rashi teaches us something wild right from the start: the Hebrew root of 'sin'a' — hatred — means it will shatter the normal boundaries of human conduct. Bilaam was so pumped up with hatred that he saddled his own donkey, something a dignitary never does. But here's the flip side we explore together: Avraham did the exact same thing, not from hatred, but from love. When Avraham was called to the Akeidah, he saddled his own donkey himself, because love breaks boundaries just as powerfully as hate does — only in the opposite direction. We then look at the angel Hashem plants in Bilaam's path and what Rashi calls a 'mal'ach of compassion' — a heavenly impediment meant to stop Bilaam from sinning and destroying himself. We talk about what that means for our own lives: sometimes when a door slams in our face, we need to ask honestly whether we're looking at an angel of compassion or just a test to push through. The donkey sees the angel and Bilaam doesn't, and Rashi explains exactly why: if human beings could see all the spiritual forces — angels, demons, the dark forces operating in the world — we would lose our minds. Hashem conceals these realities not to hide them from us, but to protect our free will and our sanity. We wrap up with a powerful mashal about soldiers in a bunker who press a button they were told never to touch — and only afterward discover the devastation it caused. That's the reality of what happens in the spiritual world when we push buttons we shouldn't, even when nothing visible seems to happen. The Chevra, we finish with Tehillim, singing the words King David wrote specifically to push away the forces of darkness — and we remember that no matter where any of us is holding right now, if Hashem was sending angels to help even Bilaam, He is absolutely sending them for us too.
