What if the thing you've been searching for your whole life — that feeling of being truly home — is actually a lost princess, and you're the viceroy sent to find her? In this shiur we dive deep into episode 4 of the Lost Princess, the famous misa of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov, and we're really getting into the heart of what this story is doing to us. We talk about what it means to have a hirer teshuva — not just knowing about the story, not writing an academic paper on it, but actually hearing it in a way that moves something inside you. That feeling where you realize you're not home, that you've wandered far from where you're supposed to be — that's the beginning of the journey back. We review the opening of the misa — the king with six sons and one daughter, the moment of anger, the night that falls, and the daughter of the king disappearing into the darkness. The bas melik is our emuna, our connection to Hashem, and the whole world we live in is called 'night' precisely because she is hidden. One of the most striking moments in the story is that it tells us the king was pained — but it never tells us what the princess herself felt. That silence, we learn, is one of the deepest levels of galus. Then we meet the sheni malchus — the viceroy, the sadik — who stands up and goes to find her, not for glory, but because he sees it is paining the king. We connect this figure to Yosef HaTzadik, the one referred to explicitly as 'sheni,' who kept refusing and refusing through every test without vacillation. And now the viceroy makes his request before setting out: he needs a mashares (a helper, representing the intellect), a horse (the body), and money. We open up why each of these tools matters, and we get a preview of where the story is heading — including the mountain of gold and the palace of pearls, and the deep Torah of Ashira Kedusha, holy money. We are wrapping up with the announcement that we are going to learn the accompanying Torah that Rebbe Nachman gives alongside this misa, which unlocks the secrets of the story in an incredible back-and-forth synergy.
