What if the single most powerful thing you can do to share Torah with another person has nothing to do with how much you know?
In this shiur we kick off an eight-part series on how to effectively share the foundations of Jewish spirituality. The whole framework comes down to one Kabbalistic truth: there is light and there is a vessel. No matter how much light you have to give, if the person in front of you cannot receive it, nothing gets transmitted. We unpack what it really means to be mashpia, to be someone with influence, and why being a living example of a happy, grounded, vibrant life is step one before you even open your mouth.
We also go through the homework for the course, which is the four opening essays of the Chofetz Chaim's Sefer Ahavas Yisrael. The Chofetz Chaim, the very same gadol who gave us the Mishnah Berurah, brings a stunning proof: if the Torah obligates me to return my friend's lost donkey, certainly I am obligated to help a fellow Jew find his lost neshamah. That framing alone is worth sitting with.
Then we dig into Klal Number One, built on the famous pasuk in Mishlei: 'Like water, face reflects face, so too is the heart of man to his fellow.' Rashi explains that whatever you are genuinely shining toward another person, that is exactly what will reflect back from their heart. We bring the story of Yaakov walking toward Eisav's army to show this is not a metaphor, it is a metaphysical reality. When you truly look at someone as a neshamah, without judgment, without an agenda, their heart opens like a vessel and the light can actually go in.
