Shalom Aleichem Chevra, what's going on! What does Moav actually fear about the Jewish people — and what does it reveal about where our real power comes from? In this shiur we dig into a fascinating sugya from the Tasha Rebi about why Moav ran to Midian with one burning question: how are the Jews winning? They watched Bnei Yisrael move through the entire Trans-Jordan, taking out Sichon and Og in ways that no normal army could pull off. So Midian gives Moav their answer — the power of the Jews is in their mouth, in their speech. That insight sent Moav straight to Balak, the master sorcerer whose entire identity was rooted in bird-magic and darkness, because they knew the only way to counter the Jewish weapon of speech was to bring someone with power in his own mouth. We unpack how Moshe's message to the king of Edom — 'your brother Israel' — was carrying a whole world inside it. Esav had the chance to be part of the blessing of Yaakov, to be part of Mashiach Ben Dovid, but he chose Har Seir while we went down to Mitzrayim. That descent, that exile, is exactly what made the promise of Eretz Yisrael ours. And the blessing Yitzchak gave Yaakov wasn't just words — it was the encoded power that our speech would shift reality. Edom understood this and pushed back: fine, you have the blessing of speech, we have the blessing of the sword. That tension is still playing out. From there we get into what this means for us practically. The Reb teaches us to gird ourselves with our weapon — tefilla, learning Torah, guarding our speech from lashon hara. We talk about the two dimensions of lashon hara: the damage to others AND the damage to yourself as a person created in the image of God who is using that godly power to speak lowly words. We also get into the beautiful flip — that tzaddikim don't treat tefilla as an interruption to their day, they treat it as the center of their day, with everything else filling in around it. Learning before davening, the red light Mishna, the Kol Boker program — it all comes back to the same foundation: our speech, our prayer, our Torah learning is our strength, and Mashiach himself will win through that same power.
